Project Description

IATI Theater (East Village)

64 East 4th Street, once called the Labor Lyceym, was the home of the German workers’ paper The Volkszeitung in the late 1800s, and later the site for the founding of the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union in 1900. But when MCBG arrived to the building in 2007, the landmark building was almost entirely vacant. As part of the city’s attempts to revitalize the area and make 4th Street a thriving artistic scene, the firm designed and oversaw the overhaul of the original MEP systems, updated the structure, architecture, and interior design, and served as applicant of record for the intial change of use to a community facility as well as 11 more times. The building is now the IATI Theater.
